BPhO Round 0: Domestic vs. International Qualification Rules & Overseas Student Preparation Strategy

Since 2025, BPhO has officially introduced a three-round selection system (Round 0 → Round 1 → Round 2). The purpose of Round 0 is to alleviate the grading pressure on the main competition (Round 1) caused by the surge in test papers (nearly 3,800 in 2024). It has now become a core screening mechanism to control participation scale and ensure competition quality.

For both Chinese and overseas candidates, the number of Round 1 spots for the China region in the 2026 season has been reduced to 3,500, of which 2,900 are reserved for IPC/SPC award winners and only 100 are reserved for Round 0 qualifiers. This makes Round 0 the "only pathway" for students without prior awards to enter the main competition.

I. Two Sets of Qualification Cutoff Scores: Which Track to Choose?

For the China Mainland region and overseas regions, Round 0 has two distinct qualification pathways. Candidates must choose based on their own student status:

Track 1: China Mainland Region — Round 0 (Intense Competition)

Target Participants: Students enrolled in international high schools within China.

Timeline: Registration for the 2026 season is expected to open in September, with a unified online computer-based exam in mid-October.

Qualification Threshold: Only the top 100 globally can secure an additional Round 1 spot, which does not consume the IPC/SPC allocation quota.

Cutoff Score: To compete for these 100 exclusive spots, the cutoff score is as high as 17 points (out of 25), indicating significantly higher competition.

Ideal Candidates: Domestic students with excellent physics fundamentals, willing to aim for high scores, and without IPC/SPC awards.

Track 2: Overseas Independent Region — Round 0 (Lower Competition)

Target Participants: Students currently enrolled in high schools outside China (e.g., U.S., Canada, Singapore, etc.), excluding those studying in the UK or mainland China.

Core Advantage: Follows the UK domestic cutoff of 11 points; reaching this score grants qualification for Round 1 online participation.

Registration Method: Apply for the overseas track through official authorized agencies; no prerequisite competition awards required.

Ideal Candidates: Overseas students who wish to avoid the intense competition of thousands of domestic candidates and secure a BPhO main competition entry with a lower score.

II. Round 0 Exam Content & Difficulty Analysis

Round 0 requires candidates to complete 25 multiple-choice questions within 1 hour. The questions cover an extremely wide range of topics, with difficulty increasing progressively—though not strictly in阶梯 (stepwise) order, and including some easier questions as well.

Breadth of Knowledge: Covers fundamental mechanics, circuit analysis, thermodynamics, optics, nuclear decay, quantum physics, and more.

Core Test Points: Circuit analysis, unit derivation, torque equilibrium, nuclear decay processes, standing waves, refraction laws, etc.

Difficulty Benchmark: Compared to the official exam (Round 1), the difficulty coefficient is comparable, with about 85%–90% consistency.

III. Four Types of Students Who Should Definitely Aim for Round 0

Those who missed out on other opportunities: Students who missed the IPC/SPC registration deadline or participated but did not win Gold/Silver awards, and thus have no direct Round 1 qualification.

Domestic students seeking a backup plan: Students studying in China who want an additional alternative pathway to increase their chances of qualifying for Round 1.

Overseas students seeking an easier path: Students studying abroad who want to secure a BPhO main competition entry with a lower cutoff score (11 points).

Lower-grade students testing the waters: G9/G10 students who want to try out the competition early and build a long-term physics academic plan.

Successfully passing the Round 0 screening allows participation in Round 1, held in early November—which is also the most valuable component for UK undergraduate STEM applications.

IV. Exclusive Preparation Strategy for Overseas Students

Facing the brand-new Round 0 format, overseas students can adopt the following strategies for efficient preparation:

Accurately identify your track: Confirm your overseas region status based on your student status, and set your target at the 11-point UK qualification cutoff—no need to blindly benchmark against the high-score threshold of the China region's top 100.

Focus on fundamentals and secure points: Under the high-pressure pace of "25 questions in 85 minutes," focus on solidifying basic and intermediate-level questions. Securing 12–15 points is enough to pass the cutoff; avoid spending excessive time on overly difficult or unusual questions.

Practice with past papers under timed conditions: Use past exam papers (especially Round 0 sample questions and Round 1 Section 1) as core materials, and adapt to the question style and exam pace through full simulation.
