Registration Closes September 20! 2026-2027 Season BPhO Round 0 Full Sprint Guide!

BPhO Round 0 (R0) is a newly added preliminary round for the British Physics Olympiad since 2025, serving as a "preparatory round" and qualification screening test for Round 1. Due to the surge in global participation, the organizing committee uses R0 for initial screening to ensure the quality and efficiency of R1 grading.

For candidates in China who have not qualified through prerequisite challenges such as IPC/SPC, R0 is an independent supplementary channel for obtaining Round 1 eligibility. This channel is limited to approximately 100 people nationwide, making the competition extremely fierce.

I. Core Exam Information and Qualification Rules

1. Basic Exam Information

  • Exam Date: September 30, 2026 (Wednesday) 17:00-18:00.
  • Registration Deadline: September 20, 2026.
  • Exam Format: 1 hour, 25 multiple-choice questions, no penalty for wrong answers.
  • Eligible Grades: Grades 10-12.

2. Scope of Assessment and Question Design Characteristics

  • Knowledge Scope: Primarily based on A-Level AS stage physics core content (covering mechanics, thermal physics, waves, optics, basic circuits, etc.), while also incorporating specific topics from IB/AP/AQA systems and advanced extension question types.
  • Question Design Orientation: Emphasizes physics scenario modeling rather than rote formula application, with relatively less calculation. Question difficulty is distributed in a gradient, with basic questions interspersed in the middle and later sections, but the overall level is highly challenging.
  • Pace Requirements: Average answering time per question is only 2.4 minutes, placing extremely high demands on problem-solving speed, accuracy, and English reading ability for long question stems.

3. Qualification Cutoff (China Region)

  • R0 itself has no gold, silver, or bronze awards; it is purely a qualification screening round.
  • The qualification cutoff for the top 100 in the 2025 China region was 17 points (out of 25).

II. Final 20-Day Sprint Preparation Guide

With less than 20 days until the September 30 exam, it is recommended to strictly follow the three phases below to convert time into tangible scores:

Phase 1 (9/15–9/20): Registration Confirmation + Diagnostic Assessment

  • Primary Task: Be sure to complete registration before September 20. Do not delay.
  • Knowledge Inventory: Spend a fixed 30-40 minutes each day reviewing AS core formulas and theorems.
  • Full Mock Diagnostic: Use an R0 sample paper or past real exam for a 60-minute full timed diagnostic. Against the 17-point safety line, precisely identify which modules have knowledge blind spots.

Phase 2 (9/21–9/28): High-Frequency Module Attack + Pace Training

  • Targeted Breakthrough: Address weaknesses exposed in the diagnostic, tackling high-frequency topics one by one, such as circuit analysis, unit derivation, torque equilibrium, nuclear decay, standing waves, and Snell's law.
  • Timed Question Sets: Maintain one timed training set daily (recommended: 15 questions / 35 minutes) to preserve multiple-choice question feel and rhythm.
  • Error Review: Strictly categorize wrong answers into two types: "ran out of time but knew how to solve" and "had no idea at all." The former is addressed by strengthening proficiency; the latter requires returning to textbooks to fill knowledge gaps. Never waste time on obscure or eccentric questions.

Phase 3 (9/29–9/30): Full Mock Simulation + State Adjustment

  • Biological Clock Alignment: Conduct the final full mock simulation on September 29, starting promptly at 17:00 to adapt to the exam time slot's biological rhythm in advance.
  • Pre-Exam Warm-Up: On exam day (September 30), only review the error notebook and formula list. Absolutely do not do new questions; keep the brain relaxed and confident.
  • Equipment Setup: Test online computer-based exam (or on-campus computer-based exam) equipment and network environment in advance. Adapt to the exam scenario with no calculator, all-English reading, and front-and-rear camera monitoring to avoid technical issues consuming answering time.
