2026 BPhO Registration Requirements – How to Secure Your Spot Without Awards

As one of the world's top physics competitions, the 2026 BPhO (British Physics Olympiad) China region has undergone disruptive changes to its registration rules. The official channel for direct, unconditional registration has been completely closed, replaced by a strict quota allocation system and prerequisite competition access mechanism. For students aiming to apply for STEM programmes at top overseas universities, precisely understanding the registration thresholds and planning prerequisite competitions in advance has become the key to securing a spot.

I. BPhO Grade Eligibility Restrictions

The 2026 BPhO main competition is only open to secondary school students in China in Grades 9–12. Primary school students, university students, and graduates who have already left school are not eligible to register. In addition, different prerequisite competitions correspond to different grade levels, and students need to match them in advance:

• JPC (Junior Physics Challenge): Suitable for Grades 7–9 – the best entry point for beginners with no prior experience.
• IPC (Intermediate Physics Challenge): Suitable for Grades 9–10 – used to obtain basic competition qualification.
• SPC (Senior Physics Challenge): Suitable for Grades 10–11 – the core pathway for sprinting towards Gold awards and securing first-batch registration slots.
• BPhO R1 (Main Competition): The optimal participation grades are 10–12.

II. Three Pathways to Secure a 2026 BPhO Entry Ticket

The 2026 BPhO China region has strictly capped the number of seats at 3,500, and has completely eliminated unconditional registration. Students must obtain entry to the main competition through one of the following three pathways:

1. IPC/SPC Awards

This is the most core pathway to secure a spot. Students who achieve a Global Gold or Silver award in the 2026 SPC, or a Global Gold award in the IPC, will have priority to lock in first-batch registration slots. If the first batch is not fully subscribed, the remaining slots will be opened to SPC Bronze award winners and IPC Silver and Bronze award winners for supplementary registration.

2. Round 0 Selection Pathway

Students may participate in the BPhO Round 0 (preliminary screening round) selection. If their score ranks among the top 100 nationwide, they can directly unlock the registration qualification for R1. It should be noted that this pathway is extremely competitive, with cutoff scores significantly higher than in overseas regions, making it quite challenging.

3. Remaining Allocated Slots

After the independently allocated slots are filled, if there are still remaining slots, they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until they are fully subscribed. If no slots remain, registration will not reopen.

III. Registration Channels and Regional Restrictions

Registration Channel Restrictions

In 2026, BPhO does not support individual self-registration. Students can only register through officially authorised ASDAN partner schools or through正规 authorised partner organisations that handle group registration. We offer registration assistance services.

Round 2 Participation Restrictions

Even if domestic students achieve a high score in BPhO Round 1, they cannot participate in BPhO Round 2 (the second selection round). This round is exclusively for students with UK school registration status.

1. Tiered Preparation for Prerequisite Competitions

• Grades 7–8: Prioritise JPC to build a solid physics foundation.

• Grade 11: Focus on SPC, aiming to win Gold or Silver awards to directly secure a first-batch registration slot, avoiding intense competition for remaining second-batch slots.
