BPhO (British Physics Olympiad) is one of the most influential physics competitions globally. Over 70% of Oxford and Cambridge STEM admits have BPhO experience. Its Round 1 difficulty is comparable to the second round of China's high school physics league, placing extremely high demands on physical thinking and mathematical derivation skills.

II. Exam Format: Full Derivation, No Room for "Guessing"

The structure of BPhO Round 1 is as follows:

The two sections have fundamentally different propositional logic:

Section 1 (Short Questions)

Approximately 18 independent short questions (in 2024, labelled a–r), each worth 3–6 marks, with a total of around 76–83 marks available, but only a maximum of 50 marks will be counted. These questions cover the full spectrum of mechanics, electricity, thermal physics, optics, waves, and modern physics — from "kinematics of a stone falling into water" (3 marks) to "energy escape ratio from parallel mirrors" (4 marks), from "power in a diode rectifier circuit" to "buoyancy of a cone with varying density." Each question is an independent physics mini-model, testing the ability to quickly identify the physics essence and set up equations.

Section 2 (Long Questions)

Candidates choose 2 out of approximately 5 long questions, each worth 25 marks, containing multiple progressively challenging sub-questions. Section 2 questions often represent a complete physics investigation — for example, starting from Newton's law of cooling, deriving the time required for a small planet to cool from formation to its current temperature, involving radiative heat transfer, differential equations, and order-of-magnitude estimation. This requires students to "stitch" together multiple physics modules in a continuous derivation.

Scoring Logic

BPhO's scoring logic is highly similar to that of BMO — process marks are far more important than the final answer. Even if the final numerical answer is wrong, as long as the derivation steps are correct and the physical concepts are clear, you can still earn a significant number of marks. BPhO does not test memorisation (the formula sheet is provided); it tests whether you truly understand physics and can describe and solve a new problem using the language of physics.

III. Summer Sprint Preparation Plan

Summer is the golden period for BPhO preparation. With about 4 months until the November Round 1 exam, there is ample time.

June–August (Summer): Foundation Building & Module Breakthrough

Focus on thoroughly mastering all AS Physics topics, and supplement with A2 and introductory university physics knowledge (such as the application of calculus in physics). The goal of this phase is to build a complete knowledge system and ensure a solid theoretical foundation in every physics module.

September–October: Past Paper Practice & Skill Enhancement

Start working through past papers from the last 10 years, with emphasis on improving answering speed for Section 1 and logical derivation skills for Section 2 long questions. Through past paper practice, familiarise yourself with the question-setting style and the construction of common physics models.

November: Full Mock Exams & Sprint Review

Strictly time yourself with full mock exams under real exam conditions, review your error log, memorise physics terminology and core formulas, and enter the official exam in your best form.
